The true story of Sweet Fanny Adams

The true story of Sweet Fanny Adams

The true story of Sweet Fanny Adams

Few people who use the expression 'Sweet Fanny Adams' know of its origin. However there was a time when it would have been recognised instantly.

When the name Fanny Adams made sensational headlines, creating a wave of horror, revulsion and pity. Little Fanny Adams was brutally murdered on Saturday 24 August 1867. Nothing much ever happened to disturb the rural Hampshire community of Alton: certainly none of the inhabitants could recall a local murder during their lifetime. So Fanny's mother, Harriet Adams, probably thought it quite safe for three small children to wander off alone towards Flood Meadow, just 400 yards from their home in Tan House Lane.

The Huffington Post really a good read and place to collect blog content (should not have said that) , any visit them and have a great day.

Winning at Social Media

It's interesting that whenever a major disruptor like social media, the Internet, etc. comes along, inevitably there are many traditional managers and practitioners who don't understand it and label it as a 'fad'.

Just because you don't understand something personally, doesn't mean it is a fad. That's the realization that industry is going through right now, that is -- social media isn't a fad, it isn't going away, we need to deal with it. Just because we don't understand what the fuss is about doesn't mean our customers won't use it, and if they're talking about us we better be listening.

White Paper - The 16 Rules of Social Media Optimization

People are becoming more and more aware of the power of social networks, therefore you need a more holistic strategy when it comes to web search - it should integrate all the places people spend their time in and where they share content that is important to them. Social network search is different from traditional search and real time search, as it allows you to find elements inside social networks, elements that were deemed relevant by someone who linked to a specific content.

UK Transport game

Business Networking | Ecademy

Online game Chromaroma has been launched in collaboration with the Greater London Authority. Players win points by completing missions and making journeys, either for themselves or for a team. Although it can make commuting competitive, by for instance trying to get fastest journey times between stations, it also awards more points for getting off a stop early and walking, cycling or travelling outside of rush hour.

The new game is produced by Mudlark, and has been in beta testing since late last year. Approximately 3,000 players have signed up already. Users need to provide Chromaroma with either a registered Oyster card or a Boris Bike key, and their data is then examined. It is provided by Transport for London with a 72 hour delay.

Challenges range from teams ‘winning’ stations by checking in to simply visiting random destinations. In due course, the makers say they will consider looking at sponsorship options.

If you've seen the recent reports that more employees are quitting their jobs as the economy improves, then hearing that employee loyalty nationwide is at a three-year low should be about as shocking as hearing that Charlie Sheen is getting a reality TV show.

I mean, we all saw this coming, right? (Well, maybe not all of us…See below.)

Today, MetLife released a new study indicating that, not only is employee loyalty at its lowest point since 2008, but some employers evidently aren't aware of this fact. (Awkward!) According to the study, 47 percent of employees report feeling a very strong loyalty to their employers, while 51 percent of employers said they felt employees were very loyal.

With MXit offering free IM, and even basic phones featuring Web connectivity, teens spend more time than ever on various social networking platforms, including the all-pervasive Facebook.

What is it that separates an average small business from a great one? We all run across basic businesses every day -- they do their jobs and provide their services, however blandly or unremarkably.

But every now and then you stumble across what can only be called a great small business -- maybe the employees are sincerely enthusiastic or the service is exceptional or the value is incredible, or something else altogether. Whatever it is, the business is memorable.
